LEGACY LAUNCHES PASSAGES FOR 2008

Saturday October 13th saw the launch of Legacy’s presentation for Carnival 2008, “Passages – a Journey through the Motherland”. Due mainly to their overseas summer commitments Legacy was the last of the large bands to launch, but from the attendance at Saturday’s event, it seems that this was the perfect time.

Legacy’s band launch was immediately preceded by a Media Reception at Tsunami, which was attended by government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, sponsors, business associates and media personnel, with special guests His Excellency George Maxwell Richards and Dr. Jean Ramjohn Richards.

Meanwhile at the Anchorage, party-goers were greeted at the entrance by Moko Jumbies moving to the sounds of African drums beaten by a large number of drummers. The entrance walkway was lined with African art and prints and so was the main dance area - with painted pictures with African themes (Giraffes, Shields, masks etc) hung from the open - air structure, which in itself provided an interesting surface for the lighting effects that were operated during the night.

Soon after midnight, with the Anchorage seemingly bursting at its seams with a lively crowd, the sound of African drums were heard coming from the rear of the venue. As these grew louder, the group of drummers appeared, followed by dancers and the Legacy models making their way towards the stage

Patrons were treated to a dynamic performance by the African dancers and drummers and then began the public unveiling of Legacy's costumes.  This was met with loud applause from a very appreciative audience as they vociferously cheered their favourite costumes. In all, twenty designs were displayed by the Legacy models. Three signature Legacy 'strongmen' in costume also created a stir when they made their way on stage, one of whom held a large boa constrictor snake as he danced with one of the models.

The costume presentation drew to a close with the appearance of the Legacy Phoenix Youth committee on stage followed by Band Leaders Big Mike & Juliet de la Bastide to the effects of confetti and fireworks.

The evening’s entertainment continued with performances by guest artistes Blazer, Oscar B, Gary Cordner, Umi Marcano, Hit Man and Laurenzo in addition to the DJs who played a host of new Soca releases mixed with the well known. Patrons partied well into the wee hours of the morning, the majority not leaving until well past 4:00am.
